From Opioids to Natural Medicine: The Story of Russell Langhammer

Russell Langhammer’s Journey to Recovery

Russell Langhammer, a survivor, cannabis advocate, microdoser and foremost a dear friend. Originating from Dallas, Texas, Russell has emerged as a dedicated plant medicine advocate in his fight against opioid addiction, traumatic brain injury, terminal illness, and PTSD. Defying dire predictions made by doctors who deemed him nearly disabled—and even declared him dead—these natural remedies revitalized his existence and enabled him to rise from despair.

A Life-Altering Injury

In a life-changing incident in the 2000s, Langhammer sustained a severe back and brain injury while working for American Airlines during a storm at Dallas Airport. This traumatic event triggered his descent into opioid addiction. His struggle began as his doctors prescribed an array of strong opiates and benzodiazepines for pain relief, despite informing him that he might never walk normally again. For years, substances like OxyContin, Dilaudid, Valium, and hydrocodone coursed through his system. Langhammer reflects on those turbulent times, saying, “With hydrocodone, I felt invincible, even at low doses.” Yet it was OxyContin that ensnared him with its atrophying grip.

The Fallout from Addiction

The fallout from his addiction was catastrophic, affecting not just his own life but also that of his family. His grandchildren withdrew, disheartened by the shadow of the vibrant individual they once knew, while his wife ultimately chose to leave him to confront his addiction alone. It took an astounding eight years for his employer to acknowledge the severity of Langhammer’s addiction.

“They let me manage airlines, with 72 employees under my supervision, coordinating international zones while translating important information – the FDA and DEA permitted me to take class two narcotics daily, yet I wasn’t allowed to use cannabis or mushrooms despite their safety. That’s why I became an advocate” – Russell

A Grueling Battle to Heal

It took Russell a grueling six months to taper his dosage from 40 milligrams to 3 milligrams, at which point he resolved never to return to prescription medications. He embraced cannabis and joined an advocacy group called NORML, discovering the benefits of dabs. “With my doctors’ support, and a combination of whole-plant medicine and mindfulness techniques, I managed to quit opioids and benzodiazepines. Today, I exemplify the positive results of cannabis and whole-plant medicine for multiple ailments,” Langhammer states.

Yet, his journey was not without further challenges, leading him to the discovery of microdosing psilocybin. Once a professional football player and bodybuilder, his body bore scars from years of steroid use and a harmful habit of chewing tobacco, which ultimately resulted in a severe mouth cancer diagnosis, thrusting him into chemotherapy and various cardiac issues. He now depends on his fourth pacemaker, demonstrating the breadth of his struggles.

A New Beginning Through Plant Medicine

The pain he endured was intolerable. “I lost my family and my job because of my addiction,” he admits, the gravity of his losses evident in his tone. “Today, I can function more like myself thanks to psilocybin and cannabis, despite still battling pain.” Through his challenges, Russell stands as a testament to the efficacy of plant medicine and human resilience. Fueled by his journey, he passionately advocates for the transformative capabilities of cannabis and psilocybin, eager to share that there’s a natural way to break free from addiction.

Microdosing Psilocybin: A New Hope

In 2019, he found himself hospitalized over 25 times, facing life-threatening heart failure. “I died right on my floor, and my pacemaker brought me back,” Russell recalls. Confronted with the harsh truth of his medical state, he was visited by a priest who delivered last rites. But Russell refused to accept his fate, telling his doctors and the priest, “The only oil I’m interested in is ‘cannabis’ oil.” A friend recommended that he explore microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. With little left to lose, Russell embraced the suggestion.

“I began microdosing in January 2020, and by April, I was traveling to Germany, Budapest, and Austria. When my ‘new’ wife and I returned home, everyone asked, ‘What have you been up to?’ I said, ‘I’m living; I’m going to live.’” Microdosing infused Russell’s life with renewed purpose and energy. “I found the motivation to start working out again, despite my pacemaker’s challenges,” Langhammer recalls.

Recovery from Opioid Dependency

Russell used cannabis to facilitate his recovery from opioid dependency and manage chronic back pain, gradually tapering off prescription medications with the use of both THC and CBD. However, his transition was far from swift, nor was it easy. Following Donald Trump’s executive order that banned prescribing benzodiazepines alongside opioids, Langhammer began suffering severe withdrawal symptoms. “It was agonizing. I sought medical help, which led to a sleep aid that put me into a nine-day coma. When I awoke, I realized I had been opioid-free for nine days and had reduced my benzodiazepine intake to three milligrams.”

Healing the Mind and Body

Russell also highlighted that his past fall at the airport had left him with a traumatic brain injury, affecting his concentration, memory, and sleep patterns. However, since starting a microdosing regimen, he reports significant improvements in these symptoms. Alongside countless benefits, he battled PTSD stemming from a lifetime of traumatic experiences. Langhammer found that microdosing helped him untangle the layers of emotional pain and trauma, granting him a new lease on life.
